Amboise, "Ambacia" in Latin, means "between two waters".
The name of the city refers to its past and its privileged geographical situation : the plateau which overlooks the Loire and the Amasse valleys.
The City spreads out, taking advantage of this natural protection of the rivers and the development of a fortress.
This castle made way for a royal residence during the reigns of King Charles VIII and François I (late 15th - early 16th century).
The Court and numerous men and women of letters and European artists stayed at Amboise on the sovereigns invitation, as did Leonardo da Vinci, for example, whose tomb is placed today in the chateau's chapel and who spent the latest years of his life in the Clos Lucé (situated in the city).
Walking in the city, you will discover the famous rue Nationale and its belfry.
Amboise also kept many remains of the Roman, medieval and renaissance times.
